History of theModel A Ford

Henry Ford (1863 – 1947) His first two starts
in the automobile industry were the Detroit
Automobile Company (1899) and Henry Ford
Automobile Company (1902) both of which failed.
His third start was the Ford Motor Company (1903)
capitalized at $150,000 with him retaining 25-1/2%
of the company. His first car was the Model A (1903).
By 1906 he had acquired over 50% and became
president of the company. In 1919 he obtained
complete ownership of the company at a cost of
$126,633,000. By the 1920’s Henry had also
acquired the Lincoln car company. In 1908 the
Model T was selected as the only car Ford would
produce. Focusing on one model would lower costs
to both Ford and the car buyer. He standardized the
color of all cars to be black in 1915 or 1916. The
black paint only required two coats which dried
faster and, therefore, speeded up the production line.
Colored paints took seven coats including a varnish c
oat. Ford settled on using only the 4-cylinder engine
after experimenting with the 2-, 4- and 6-cylinder
in-line engine blocks and an 8-cylinder “X” engine block

In 1915, Henry decided to cut the work shifts back

to a 6-hour day and raise the workers pay to $5 per

day (twice the industry standard pay), then to $6

per day in 1919 and finally to $7 per day in 1930.

This allowed him to run the assembly lines 24-hours

per day.Workers had to stay at their work station

until relieved for lunch and bathroom breaks, and

then again during shift changes. All workers were

on a mandatory 2-week rotating schedule.

In 1924, car sales for Ford were at 49.0% while

Chevrolet was at 7.7%. By 1926 Ford had

slipped to 36.2% while Chevrolet had climbed

to 16.2%. The Model T had become out of date

with the other car manufacturers in body style

and colors, engine power and ease of use. Henry’s

son, Edsel, and other executives spent several

years convincing Henry that a new Ford model

needed to be developed before he finally caved

into them. The new model was to be neither an

update nor a restyling of the Model T. The new

Model A Ford (1928-1930) was being designed

while still finishing out production of the Model T

in 1927.

The 15th million Ford was produced in 1927. Ford

estimated the cost of retooling the factories and car

sales losses at $100 million, while others estimated

costs closer to $250 million.

Ford started a newspaper campaign talking about

the new Model A Ford months before the first car

was ever produced. Millions of people awaited its

unveiling in December of 1927 and over 500,000

orders for the new model were written. An average

of 20 cars per day were being produced by October

1927, and the number had risen to 8,000 cars per

day by the end of 1928. Over 5 million Model A

Fords were eventually produced in the US between

October 21, 1927 and April 30, 1932.

The first Model A produced was a Tudor model

with engine number A1. This car eventually had the

body changed over to a Phaeton body and was given

by Henry Ford to Thomas A. Edison in 1928. The

new Model A Fords looked a lot like the Lincoln cars

and were also call “the baby Lincoln” car. Car bodies

were now to be painted in a variety of colors with

complimenting pin stripping. Some car bodies had a

single color while others could be painted in two colors.

The fenders were always painted black.

The early 1928 (E28) Fords had a sliding gear 3-speed

transmission attached to a multi-disc clutch, a 203 cubic

inch engine rated at 40 HP at 2200 rpm, a Zenith

carburetor, an Abell starter with ½” shaft, a laminated

Safety glass windshield, four wheel mechanical brakes,

a safety/parking brake setup that used the same main

brake shoes, a five brush Powerhouse generator,

expensive Houdaille double acting shock absorbers

and a red colored steering wheel.

Henry liked using cast metal parts since they indicated

a quality product, in such places as the fender and

running board brackets, the carburetor body, the exhaust

manifold clamp and wheel hubs.

Cars produced by Ford contained lots of metal whereas

the Fordor models produced by Briggs and Murray still

used a lot of wood.

Several states would not accept this common brake

shoe safety/parking brake setup causing Ford to

redesign the complete braking system. The safety/parking

brake handle was moved from the left hand side of the

car frame to in front of the transmission shifter. A new

design for the rear hubs, drums, backing plate and wheels

were required due to the adding of a separate safety/parking

brake shoe in these rear drums. To allow use of the same

kind of wheels on the front of the cars required a redesign of the

front assembly.

The original “A” wheels were made obsolete (renamed “AR”)

and a new “B” wheel was developed. The A/AR wheels and

assemblies are not interchangeable with the B wheel parts.

The year is 1910 one hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the Year 1910:

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.

Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.'

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

The Five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores.

Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health'.
( Shocking? DUH! ) (Kinda like smoking...first almost everyone did and now it's "almost" a crime...that will happen soon)
Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U. S. A. !

Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

Model "T" Station Wagon

May 31, 1927, the last Ford Model T rolled off the assembly line. It was the first affordable automobile, due in part to the assembly line process developed by Henry Ford. It had a 2.9-liter, 20-horsepower engine and could travel at speeds up to 45 miles per hour. It had a 10-gallon fuel tank and could run on kerosene, petrol, or ethanol, but it couldn't drive uphill if the tank was low, because there was no fuel pump; people got around this design flaw by driving up hills in reverse.
Ford believed that "the man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he can give for a dollar, instead of how little he can give for a dollar, is bound to succeed." The Model T cost $850 in 1909, and as efficiency in production increased, the price dropped. By 1927, you could get a Model T for $290.
"I will build a car for the great multitude," said Ford. "It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one - and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's great open spaces."

Ron Smith is a new member of our club and he just bought this car and these are his plans for it

I purchased this 1936 Dodge D2 from a fellow in Colville, Washington the weekend before Thanksgiving. We hauled it home the following Wednesday.

I happened to find it while chasing a rumored '37 Ford pickup. The pickup was a wasted trip, too far gone for restoring, but this was sitting in an adjacent shed. The wife actually liked it, which was unusual, most of my ideal finds are "Ugly" and a source of comment.
The motor, transmission and running gear were all there, but had not been run in years. We drained the oil, flushed the system, installed a new water pump, distributor cap, points, plugs, condenser, rebuilt the carburetor, installed a new master cylinder and got it running.We need to find a new carburetor, but it runs well, smooth and no problems other than acceleration, all carb problems.

The tires are toast, weathered but available from Les Schwab, and will be put on prior to summer.We will need to rewire the complete car, whoever tried restoring it before had clipped all wires close to the lights and engine. The only body work to be done, is to reseal the top, this was the first year that had metal roof, and not a soft top, and the metal is inserted into the original soft top opening this year, needless to say, it leaks pretty good right now, but once fixed, will look good. There were creases in the grilles guard where it had been backed into, but those were taken care of by the body man.I have located working headlights, the taillights are complete and only need wired in. We have new glass and gaskets, and will be repairing the drivers door, which had been disassembled for some reason, but is all there. Lubrication seems all needed for the regulators, and all hardware is in the car. The windshield is frozen in place, so we will have to work on getting it loose and fixed so opens properly.

My plans are to have it to Larry to remove the headliner by February, fix the roof leaks, and then install the glass and seals, so Larry can redo the interior. We will do all bodywork this spring or sooner, but only prime the repaired spots, so we can enjoy the car this summer for functions with the club, then paint it over the winter.

My little Ford was very excited the other day because we thought we were going to have a playmate in the form of an other 1941 Ford. She looks to be in pretty good shape.

She's not really, she need quite a bit of TLC.

But guess what, Jack Yale, the owner, isn't going to let us play, he is going to lock her up and hide her away because some one told him she is worth more money if she is kept original.

How dumb is that!!

Oh well so our love will be unrequited.

Transmission update

Some of you might remember some of the early Volkswagen commercials back in the mid to late 50's. They were very simple. One of my favorites was a very simple one extolling the abilities of the bug. Here is my version of that commercial in the form of an update on the work on my Ford. Don't forget to turn on your speakers.

The saga of the Kaput Transmission

For those of you who remember from the last post, My police cruiser was not in the parade and this is the reason. The Tranny is kaput (means broken).

It seems I did a little damage to the syncro gears, well not a little but a lot. This turned out to be quite a learning experience for me, not only about how the tranny works, but about the stuff people are made of.
The first person to offer to help was Jack Yale who didn't hesitate and when the word got out that I needed help, people came out of the woodwork. Everybody had a suggestion as to what I should do, some of the suggestions I couldn't put in print.

Here are some of the parts after they were sandblasted with the help of a fellow by the name of Mike Bughi, who I didn't even know. But he insisted that the work be done in his garage which was heated and very organized as you can see from these pictures.

He,Mike Bughi, said I was to do the work and he would over see, well that didn't last long. He first sandblasted the parts then painted them, and ended up doing quite a bit of the actual work.

See what I mean about neat and organized. This is a layout of all the parts, new ones and the old ones cleaned and painted ready for reassembly.

There she is, I hope she works as good as she looks.

We had help from another fellow not pictured here, but equally as helpful, John Trumbo.

I don't want you to think that we over worked ourselves, we took time out to play some games such as " I can't find the tool I was just using" and " where are the bolts that go here" and last but not least " where does this part go".

All in all it was a life enriching experience, thanks again.

In my next post I will share the experience of putting it back in the car and whether it worked or not.

Veteran's Day Parade

First order of business is the presentation of candy and flowers to Bob and Delores McClary for all their efforts on our last tour.
We did show up for the Veteran's Day Parade even though it was very cold and windy.
Martha's car and John's screenside let the pack.

Here we are again, doing what we do best, standing around waiting. Notice this picture is taken from inside the car, my mother did not raise a fool ,it's cold out there.

If you enlarge this picture you will see my son (Bryan) standing in front of the pole with his wife (Sarah) on his right and flanked by my two grand kids Zach and Ellie. They were looking for me in my police cruiser, but alas I broke my car a couple of days before. That is a story for another time.

I think we ,or should i say the McClarys, got in over their head this time. we put together a little garage tour with the Model A club and invited every one to the McClarys for breakfast. I stopped counting at 34, and that didn't count spouses. But Delores got them all fed.

The street was a little crowded with old cars by the time every one showed up.

I don't know about other clubs, but with ours, when there is free food there is always a very good turn out.

I think if one more person showed up they would have had to eat in the bathroom.

Our first stop was at Jim Stafford's He has some really neat cars as you can see. the one I really like is the woodie pictured below.

Jim has a lot old cars and signs and tools and "junk, plenty to look at.

His fascination seems to lie in early 30's trucks.

I don't think these roses among thorns belong here.

Our next stop was at Dave Underwood's garage.

Dave is into Packards primarily, like this some what rare coupe pictured below that is very restorable and if I am not mistaken for sale, but he has others also

This is my favorite. I think it is a 32 dual cowl Packard.

Well no we are off tho garage if one of the Model "A" members, Bill Schaeppi.

That is going to be one good looking 31 model a coupe. But, what is with the clean and organized garage. Check out the floor , you can see your face in it

But he is doing a great job with this restoration.

This little truck is a work in progress for another person who gives most of us an inferiority complex by keeping his garage so clean. SO CUT IT OUT!

Next we went to Pete Jackson's for a little presentation put on by John Trumbo about restoration techniques. We also had our lunch catered by the McClary's again. GREAT JOB BOB AND DELORES! Last but not least, we stopped at John Trumbo's to see his work in progress.

well that wasn't really our last stop, We went next door to Jack Yale's but by then I had run out of batteries and energy. I will take you and a private tour of Jack's garage at some later date.

We went to Bickelton

Bickelton is a pretty Small town. it is known for it's large number of Blue bird bird houses and the now defunct hoop-n-holler museum, but for a small town just look at number of cars that showed up for the car show. Speaking of blue birds,the fellow that rode down with me was showing us all of the bird houses along the road, then he pointed out a burnt post and said that the birds must have been smoking in bed.
Some of the PT Cruiser people really got into spirit of the show.

They had a really cool carousel museum

And a pioneer setting in the building.

My Grandson, "Cole", really enjoyed the barbed wire display.

I took this picture for a buddy in the club that has a truck like this.

A of course we had to come home with a couple of awards.One went to Pete Jackson and his Model "A". The other went to Jack Jale and his 40 Merc. Pte's is on the left and Jack's is on the right next to my cop car.

Here we are, doing what we do best at parades, waiting. It gave us time to inspect Richard Kuch's newly restored 55 Chevy. What a beautiful car.

We even had our own queen in the parade. Click on picture to read the banner she is wearing.

Here is a Boattail to give Jack some competition. It is owned by a new member of our club, Jim Sterling, Owner of Sterlings restaurant in Kennewick

Pleasant surprise, Audrey showed up with her Packard. No that's not her standing by the car, don't know who they are, but they are cute.

After the parade we all went over to Frank and Lindell Smith's for a picnic. It looks like our Queen is hitting the bottle a little hard.

On the 14 of Aug we took our cars to The Manor at Canyon lakes. We had a very good showing i think there were 13 cars from our Club

This is one of the better retirement homes in the Tri-Cities. They fed us quite well for our effort. Salads, corn bread, hot dogs, German sausage, cookies, Ice cream, soft drinks and coffee. And beer too, I think.

We had live entertaiment and dancing.

And, I think , alittle "hanky panky". Would you believe that between the two of them they have had 184 Birthdays

Ed Edwards won the door prize. It was a bucket full of beer and chocolate covered chuckar cherries.

Trip to Grandview for car show

Here is part of our line up at the Grandview Car Show. Jim Ayers came in his "Vette", Jim Vetrano drove his Studebaker, Phil Prather and Dick Johanson brought their Model "A"s, Roy Holmes came in His GMC P/U, new member Bob Heaton Showed off his 64 Buick, and last but not least I came in my 41 Ford Cruiser.

Here is one of the Award winners. I think we upset some of the locals when we went home with three of the trophies.

The three awards that were won were Me for best in 40's, Phil for best in 20's, and Dick for best in 30's. What a group, the Three Amigos

Joseph Days Parade

The last part of July I, my son Bryan, and my grandson Zach took of for Joseph Oregon to participate in the Joseph Days Parade as the guest of a friend of mine who was a member of our club before he moved to Joseph.

This is the welcome you receive when you drive in to town.
These fine people were our hosts for the weekend, Denny and Linda Kehl

This is Denny's car that will be in the parade also.

He had the still installed in the car to appear as a rum runner of prohibition days.

The idea was for me to chase and arrest him.

Here you can see my deputy is about to give them a ticket.

But as you can see the rum runner's buddy is trying to bribe the deputy.

Our little skit in the parade won us a blue ribbon for first place.

I also found a great little fixer upper all ready for restoration.

Well here we are at the pump man's barn. We were told that's where we were going, but had no idea what it meant. So here we are standing around trying to guess. No one guessed right.

Now we know. He collects Gas Pumps and WHAT A COLLECTION HE HAS.

every size and brand one could think of.

He also collects the globes for the top of the pumps. Shelf after shelf of globes.

Now here is the part I like.
FOOD!

In April this year we took a trip sponsored by Fred Fraser to Walla Walla to visit the garage of a friend of his. Here we are lined up ready to go. Do you think we can agree on how to get there?

I don't think so, there seem to be many differing opinions.

But we did finally get there with out any break downs.
This little Car got quite a lot of attention be cause we were told that it had an automatic transmission, and it did! he had installed a Toyoto transmission and it fit with very little modifications

Now this was a nice little Model "A"

But this was my favorite, not just be cause of the picnic basket and wine, but that helps.

There was a lot to see on this trip so I will post quite a bit more over the next couple of weeks, so keep watching.

An Amazing "Barn Find"

1940 Dodge
?This is like opening a time machine.

Hidden for Half a Century:??
The 1940 Barn Dodge!
You have heard stories of barn finds before. Some sound incredible, some unbelievable. But here's one that might top 'em all. It's the true story of one 1940 Dodge Deluxe?Sedan.
Back in 1940, life in the Country was running at a different pace. You could leave your house unlocked, and, of course, your car.Television and graffiti were words without meaning. Pearl Harbor was an event of the future. It would take two more years until the United States would enter World War II. Life was hard but good . . .

At about this time VIN *30231403* was built by proud American workers in Detroit, Michigan, one of 84,976 Dodge D-14 DeLuxe four-door sedans manufactured in 1940. A veterinarian from Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, purchased the blue Dodge new at the local Dodge dealer in Boise. He used it to respond to calls all through the war years; his 1944 permit is still affixed to the windshield. Being a very valuable asset during war times, the car was always parked in a dedicated spot in the barn when not in use. In 1948, the good Doctor passed away. The car was put on blocks and covered with bed sheets. No, it was not going to be for sale. Who would have guessed at that time that the Dodge would be asleep for more than 50 years . . .

Children became adults, parents, then grandparents. The old Dodge was still slumbering in the barn. In the late 1980s an attempt was made to awaken and sell the car. Finally, early in 2003, the time had come. The bed sheets were taken off, the car was lifted from the blocks, and the tires were filled up with air. A new owner was found. He took the Dodge to Southern California.

63 years old and with only 42,342original milesshowing on its odometer, this Dodge personifies the term "reference car." More importantly, it represents a rare opportunity to experience how it felt driving a new car in the 1940s.?Time to start our little journey around this amazing Dodge . . .
The body, amazingly, is straight and absolutely rust free, thanks to being stored in a dry, well ventilated barn, away from the elements. The blue lacquer paint is original, factory applied. Sure, it's worn thin on the tops of the fenders, shows a myriad of nicks, imperfections, and touch ups from the past. There are a few small dings here and there, but not an ounce of body filler nor a single rust bubble. It's all heavy metal! Repainting this car--ever--would be an unforgivable sin! Its patina is irreplaceable and gives the Dodge its inherent value.

Another Dodge industry first for 1940: safety rims! The wheels still feature their factory triple pinstriping, the heavily chromed hubcaps are beautifully preserved. Even the painted red detailing is still intact! Bias ply tires of the dimension 6.00x16 look original as well. I don't think they make "Pennsylvania Rx Supertest Cord S-3" rubber anymore . . .

Open the doors and be invited into a cabin that's 100% factory original. Unmolested, unmodified, unrestored. It has the special 1940s aroma and charm that cannot be duplicated. It should never be restored, instead be enjoyed just the way it is.

Dashboard is a masterpiece of Art Deco design. Fabulous painted metal creates the ambiance of lightly stained wood. Nickel plated accents duplicate the look of then-popular costume jewelry. Every single part seems infused with the designer's idea to create a harmonious environment; details such as the retracting ash receiver lid are simultaneously good-looking and functional. There's simply no comparison to present-day throwaway products, sprouting black plastic appendages everywhere.Nevertheless, the Dodge was built with entirely modern creature comforts. It features dual electric windshield wipers, Sealed Beam lamps, floating power, hydraulic brakes, telescopic shock absorbers, a column-shifted, synchronized transmission, tinted glass, a chromed horn ring, and a host of other innovations.

What was found in the felt-lined, locking glovebox is nothing short of astonishing in its historical context:

Ample space for three on the comfy front bench, featuring "airfoam" seat cushions. Original mohair still looks good, with the unavoidable stains and moth attacks kept to a minimum.

Through large, rear-hinged suicide doors, entry to the spacious passenger compartment is easy, even when wearing a top hat. Luxuriously equipped with arm and foot rests, woven grab handles, beveled-glass interior light, and (unused) ash tray, passengers will invariably exclaim: "This feels like Driving Miss Daisy!"

Roomy trunk sports original jute mats. Original spare wheel and jacking equipment are present, as well as some spares and a small tool tray. Also included is a set of new GOODYEAR tires of the proper size and a set of new inner tubes. We did not feel the need to mount the new tires, however, it might be advisable before embarking on an extended journey.

A beautiful classic car, ready to be of service!
"Let us MARFAK your car!" proclaims TEXACO's old service sticker on the door jamb. Dodge was just lubed and serviced, 2,000 miles ago, in 1948 . . ..

Note the carmine-colored, bakelite necker knob, Dodge's early version of power assisted steering. If you have to ask why it's called anecker knob, you're probably too young to buy this car.

Engine compartment is clean and original as well. Dodge's 217cu.in, 6-cylinder engine was good for 87 lively horsepower. It starts instantly and runs like the proverbial Swiss watch. Items recently replaced or serviced include the battery, water pump, ignition wires, spark plugs, fuel tank, carburetor, brakes, and shocks. Original honeycomb radiator core looks gorgeous!And, yes, the horn works, just like everything else on this time machine.

Amazingly intricate, heart-shaped grille presents itself in outstanding condition, with brilliantly sparkling chrome. Bumpers and overriders are beautiful and functional, too. Car's brightwork appears excellently preserved throughout. Note the wonderfully maintained running boards, which were optional on the 1940 models.So, what's it like driving a 63-year old Dodge?

Very impressive, thank you very much. Turn on the ignition--with the original "CDPD" key--and press the foot knob for the starter. The engine comes to life instantly, idling almost inaudibly. Pull the gear lever down into first, release the clutch, and you'll pull away smoothly. Everything is smooth about the Dodge. Suspension and brakes transmit a safe and sound feeling. Acceleration is brisk, at least by 1940 standards. All the gauges work. Oil pressure is great and the car runs cool. In a nutshell, it's a delightful cruiser!?Even the PHILCO radio still hums when turned on; it seems the speaker cone needs replacing.

All this car needs is one appreciative caretaker. It's a very rare find and definitely a "keeper" for the right Dodge enthusiast.

Remember I told you I ran into some problems along

the way,Well here is one of them.

This damage had Paper glued on the inside and Bondo

on the outside then painted

Now it has been repaired correctly with a little welding, a little

fiberglass and very little bondo.

Not by a professional, but by me, a rank amatuer Not bad . HUH!

After all those months of taking things off I can finally start

putting things back on.

As you can see I got some of the chrome trim put back on.

Oh, and the hood is painted too.

Here is a shot of the finished dash board.

Cleaned up pretty good.

My New Project

This is my 1941 Super Deluxe Ford two door sedan as it looked

when I bought it.

This is what I want it to look like when I am done.

So let's get started with disassembly.

There, I got the white painted.

Now the black.

All of this work is being done in my driveway as you can probably tell.
So far it appears as though things are going smothly, au contraire bon ami.
I ran into several problems with some of the work that was done on the car before I got it.
I will go into more detail about that in my next post.

Terry Shegrud of West Richland, Wa. sent this sugestion and question to Auto Restorer magizine and got this response.

"Vinegar rust removal & broken taps

Vinegar is a tool that you can use to remove rust from car parts. I have various size tubs to de-rust small nuts and bolts or even larger body parts. It takes about two weeks of soaking in the vinegar and then, after drying the parts, use a wire brush in a drill or in a drill press to finish cleaning off the rust.
Vinegar will clean a corroded battery cable in 5-10 minutes and leave it much cleaner than soda, and vinegar is cheaper than catsup. I use and reuse my vinegar.
Now, I also have a question. I am restoring a 1925 Model T Ford and broke a tap in a screw hole. Is there any help for me on this?

Vinegar will, in fact, remove rust because, as the taste tells us, it contains a weak acid.
This acid, called acetic or ethanoic acid, will dissolve rnst but care must be exercised because it also will dissolve other things, including zinc and nickel.
So if, for example, you have a nickel plated part that has rnst on one portion, be mindful of the fact that vinegar will likely remove the nickel plating in addition to the rust.
The broken tap can be very difficult to extract. If part of it is sticking out of the hole you may be able to weld a nut to it and then use a wrench or socket to turn the nut and tap out of the hole.
If the tap is broken flush or beneath the surface then you can try drilling it out. It is crucial to drill through the center of the broken tap and this may be virtually impossible if the break is jagged.
Another possible option is to dissolve the tap using a plasma cutter or EDM
(electrical discharge machine). An advanced machine shop will sometimes have one or both of these and in the hands of a skilled operator they may be effective in removing the broken tap if the surrounding material on your antique car part can stand up to the process.

Some Tips Regarding Broken Tap Extraction.

In response to Teny Shegrud's December question about broken tap removal, he should try a broken tap extractor made . by Walton tools. Check their Web site.
The extractor consists of four fingers that slide down the flutes of the broken tap. A barrel and collar hold everything together, and a tap handle fits on top.
You need to be careful and gentle in backing out the broken tap, but it works very well.

Here are some other approaches: If the hole is not a blind hole, a brute force method is to take a flat-nosed punch and just smack the bugger and drive it out. Of course, some thread damage will result, but maybe not enough to matter. If there's lots of damage, you can drill the hole and thread it to the next
largest size, or use a Helicoil. .
The torch method works pretty well (with large taps), because the broken tap is high carbon steel and sometimes will bum out neatly before the lower-carbon or cast iron bums, but you need luck and finesse, and will have to clean up the threads.

I Don't know how many people who read this blog know where Richland Washington is or what it is famous for. Well we are located in a desert in the south east corner of the state and our fame comes from having a nuclear site that was involved in the Manhattan Project, http://www.atomicmuseum.com/Tour/manhattanproject.cfm By following the link you will learn more about us. Now the reason I mention that is so you might better understand why the oldest cemetery in Richland puts on this little celebration each year,I say little, however this year we had 650 visitors.

Looks like there is a funeral taking place right now. Or this could be a picture taken 60+ years ago. Actually it is our car club members attending the annual celebration I told you about.

The lady in the rocker is an actor who is portraying a passed on member of one of the families buried here. She is telling of the life and history of her family to a crowd of school kids from the area

These are the actors that help put on the celebration.

We were invited to bring our cars to add some reality to the celebration.

The two Model "A"s belong to Ed Edwards in the front and Pete & Grace Jackson in the back.

OK, Here is the scoop. My wife and our cat co-operate a blog for and written by "CATS".

So I made the mistake of telling my wife that no one was leaving comments on my blog. Well she mentioned it to our cat and the next thing I knew I had cats from all over the world visiting my blog. Now they all want to go for a ride in the classy cars. I took some for a ride, not good enough, they wanted to drive. As you can see they won. the orange cat in the passenger seat is our cat. As it stands now the count is 62 for the cats and 4 for humans.

Yes, It was me who was taking all the parts off of that 41 ford and then finally taking the entire car over to Jack Yale's place to continue restoring it as a old time Sheriff's black and white patrol car.

I was going to continue working on it in my carport, however my wife threatened to hang a sign on saying WHITE ELEPHANT FOR SALE.

Sorry Phil ! But now you get top and solo billing. Phil Prather of Kennewick has brought out his 1929 Model A Ford sports coupe. The fully restored Ford sports a kewanee green body with black fenders, and is running on its original four-cylinder engine with three-speed transmission. The sport coupe was built to look like a convertible, but the top does not come down. Two can ride in front, but other passengers had to take the rumble seat in the rear. Rumble seats were located over the rear wheels, which tended to give passenges a bumpy ride. Henry Ford's sports coupe sold in 1929 for $530.

Here are the rest of the pictures.Here's another familiar set of classic wheels. This 1950 Plymouth four-door sedan has been seen around the Tri-Cities for half a century. Known as Fanne -- notice the license plate -- the Plymouth is being driven by Red Rutherford of Kennewick. It is all original, including the green paint, and is destined to be one of the vehicles to be placed in the Three Rivers Transportation Expo Museum. The six-cylinder deluxe sedan spend a lot of years parked in a garage in Finley before Jim Mokler bought it with plans to preserve the car in driving condition. Mokler's widow donated the car two years ago to the museum. Price when new $1,566.
Get out of the way of this 1935 Auburn boat-tail speedster. Not original, but very close to the real thing, Pete Jackson, with his wife Grace, is driving a Glen Prey fiberglass reproduction of that amazing classic. Built as one of 81 repros in the 1960s, this beautiful white driving machine rides on a Lincoln driveline, powered by a 460 cubic-inch engine with automatic transmission. Burgundy interior gives the luxury car a nice accent. And just like the original model, the two-seater has that distinctive boat-tail and those hot-hot-hot external pipes. Mr. Prey was a stickler for details, and for good reason. He bought out all the Auburn Motor Car new-old-stock parts to use for his projects. The original cost of an Auburn boat-tail in 1935 was $2,245. Mr. Prey sold his creations in the 1960s for $7,000.
The name Packard stood tall in American motoring. Its motto was "Ask the Man Who Owns One." But the driver of this 1932 coupe roadster, Dennis Jackson, with his wife Karla, will tell you this beautifully restored chariot speaks well enough for itself. It has a rich beige and maroon paint, burgundy leather interior and that unmistakable Packard profile atop its front grill and hood. The power train is a straight 8 coupled to a 3-speed transmission. This Packard came from the factory equipped with dual sidemounts, a rumble seat and a place to stow golf clubs for a circuit around the links on the way home from the office. The golf club compartment can be seen just behind the passenger side door. Packard also gave this car a special comfort feature -- the shock absorbers can be adjusted from inside the car while driving. All this and more in 1932 if you had the $1,940 to buy it off the showroom floor.
You wouldn't have wanted a ride in this 1924 Dodge Brothers commercial car when it was new. It was originally purchased by the city of Pasco for a truant officer. Owner/driver John Nelson of Richland is the fifth owner of the screenside, which sits on a three-quarter ton Dodge chassis and has a body built by Graham Brothers. The Dodge has all its original equipment, including a 212-cubic inch four-cylinder engine that boasts up to 37 actual horsepower. This screenside has survived with virtually all its original equipment and details, including a factory-installed plaque on the dash that reads: "Overloading or overspeeding will void your warrantee --speed 25 miles per hour. But today's improved roads allow Mr. Nelson to cruise 40 mph or better.
Here's a true American classic. This 1934 Cadillac 4-door convertible is being driven by its owner, Jack Yale of Kennewick. The battleship gray body with black fenders is completely original in its restoration. It has red leather interior, suicide doors, a fully convertible 3-position top and divider window to provide privacy for the rear compartment. Jack acquired the Cadillac, which rides on an exceptionally long 148-inch wheelbase earlier this year, knowing it was one of only five built in this body style. It came to him with just 21 post-restoration miles. The big, beautiful Caddy bears serial number 2. It is top of its class as a show car, having won first place in the senior division in both the American Auto Association and the Classic Car Club of America. It's original price, at the depth of the Great Depression, was $8,060.

Here are the pictures of the cars and the commentary during the Downtown Kennewick Show and Shine. Walter P. Chrysler built this 1931 CD-8 roadster when American motor cars were approaching the peak of artistic design. The white and red convertible has maroon upholstery and dual sidemounts, which were standard. A straight-8 engine powers the car easily, and a 4-speed transmission gives the driver enough options to take advantage of the roadster's road-handling features and those 110 horses under that long hood. One of Chrysler's claims to fame is that he introduced hydraulic brakes to the motoring world. The driver, John Trumbo of Kennewick, could have owned one of these new in 1931 for a mere $1,535.
Jim Vetrano of Kennewick is driving his gleaming 1931 Studebaker Commander 8 that has spent its entire existence in the Tri-Cities. This luxury sedan was top of the line for Studebaker when it was purchased originally at a Pasco dealership. Vetrano found the sedan intact, but with a broken engine, where it was stored in a barn for 40 years. He did a total mechanical restoration, but was able to retain the original upholstery. It's green and black paint is a correct color scheme for a Studebaker of that vintage. Dual sidemounts give the old Stude a commanding stance. Studebaker engines, which had nine -- count them -- NINE main bearings, were known for having gutsy power. They could pull the heavy car from less than 10 miles per hour to 70, in third gear. Climbing hills was no problem, but coming down was something else. Those 4,000-pound Studebaker sedans had mechanical brakes! The Commander sold in 1931 for $1,850.
Elegance overstated embodies this rare 1932 Chrysler Imperial 4-door convertible, with chauffeur Dave Stands of Kennewick at the controls. The massive straight-8 uses 384 cubic inches to generate 150 horsepower, and the wheelbase is the largest ever built by Chrysler. It is 11 feet from the front bumper to the driver's seat. Produced as 1 of only 18 such models, this fabulous vehicle was purchased new by MGM movie studios to transport movie stars to and from the locations for shooting pictures in the West. The likes of Roy and Dale Rogers and Tom Mix could have been celebrities who enjoyed the luxury of this Chrysler. The emerald blue body with tan top and interior is the epitome of opulence on wheels. Cost when new, only $3,195.
This 1935 Auburn cabriolet, driven by Ed Edwards, is a sleeping beauty. Its black cherry body and burgundy leather interior are accented with silver trim. A Lycoming straight-8 engine and manual 3-speed transmission provide the motive power, while a rare 2-speed rear axle gives the Auburn extra ummpf when needed. The builder guaranteed the cabriolet would do 100 mph, and it still can 73 years later. The owner found this rare classic in a museum in South Bend, Ind., not far from where it was built by the Auburn Motor Car Company in Auburn, Ind. And here's a tidbit: the Auburn Motor Car Company also manufactured two other American classics -- the Cord and the Duesenburg, better known as a Duzy. This car was modestly priced in 1935 at $1,361.
Here's a rare name from highways of the past. This 1940 LaSalle convertible coupe was the last of the line. They did not return after car makers resumed production following World War II. A black cherry exterior, tan top and tan interior give the LaSalle a classy look, while its flathead V-8 delivers 120 horsepower to a 3-speed column shift tranny. The decade of the 1930s brought changes for automobile design, as seen in this LaSalle. The rumble seat went away to be replaced by a exceptionally large trunk space. But this 2-door convertible does have a back seat, which is tucked behind the two folding front seats. The original price of this pre-war classic, which is driven by Fred Fraser, was $1,535.

Have you ever been just sitting around thinking about the very important things like, Oh I don't know , things like how thankful you are that there "euphoniums" in the world? Then you are struck by the realization that you have no clue what the HECK a euphonium is.

Could this be a Euphonium? ...... No! ......But he could tell you a lot about one.

This is a Euphonium and our own Joe Kuhns plays one in the Columbia Basin Concert Band.Ask him about it, I'm sure he will tell all about it, and also about all the FREE concerts they preform.

This is one update that I don't really like to post. We have lost another member! Wayne Shreve passed away this week of complications of congestive heart failure.

Wayne was a man who defied all the odds and was able to keep a joyful demeanor in spite of his medical problems.

He was proceeded in death by his younger brother Vernal, who we all knew and loved.

Our sympathies and prayers go out to both Shreve families in their time of sorrow.

I'm sure there is a "Junk Yard" in heaven and I am sure that Wayne and Vernal have both been there already scrounging for antiques and car parts.

they will both be missed very much.

This screen side was purchased originally purchased by the City of Pasco as a truancy wagon.

I think this little girl wants to go for a ride in the Cadillac.
The mini parade was a great success. Jack took seven of his cars. He even took his new Caddy.

Of course he wouldn't let any else drive it. Would you?

Well this year's swap meet is under way. We had a great turn out this year to help set it up.

Of course we also had our share of chiefs, that I think may have outnumbered the indians.

So much for tomfoolery(does any one remember that word). That is Martha's "1925" Hupmobile that Jack has been working on and it appears that the babbet is completely gone, but it does not appear that there was any damage dome to the crank. She should be back on the road soon.

Next topic. At our last breakfast we talked about going to Hepner Or, for the Irish Days Celebration. I didn't go the last time, but was told that the people that did go had a great time.

I'm going to try to go this time and drive my new old car. Sure hope it makes it.

Sorry I haven't been posting at all since the 14th, but now I am back.

Now as for that new car that I promised to show you, here it is

It is a 1941 Super Deluxe Ford 2 door sedan. The paint is in very bad shape, but the body is very straight and the interior is a brand new LeBaron Bonny interior. I didn't really buy it, I traded my Mercedes (1973 450sl roadster) for it. It came from the Boston area. By the way if you don't know who is writing this, It's me Denny Jackson.

If I had driven it back, I could have stopped at this gas station in Illinois.

I don't think I would have gotten the kind of service now that I would have back in the 1800's when Jack Yale owned it. Yes I meant 1800's but I think it was more like the early 1900's when Jack was running it. Ha-Ha-Ha

Update on Vern

The operation went well and he is on the mend. He is, however haveing some problems with the medication. He is walking some, but not enough. Probably won't be home this week.

He is at Sacred Heart in Spokane in room 618 . Martha's phone is 539-4753

Here is something you car buffs probably didn't know.

The 3 Goldberg brothers, Norman, Hiram, and Maxwell invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. Didn't know that, did Ya ? On July 17th, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97º. The 3 brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary in to telling him that 3 gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car which was about 130º F then turned on the air-conditioner and cooled the car off immediately. The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them 3 million dollars for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for 2 million but they wanted the recognition by having a label 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner' on the dashboard of each car that it was installed in. Now old man Ford did not like anything but a Ford name on his cars, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg’s name on 2 million Ford cars. They haggled back and forth for about 2 hours and finally agreed on 4 million dollars with the agreement that just their first names would be shown. And so, even today, all Ford air-conditioners show on the controls, the names 'Norm, Hi, & Max'. There, now Ya know it. Ha Ha

Great news! Vern made it through his 5 bypass heart surgery. He is already giving the staff a hard time. He went to Spokane on Saturday (I think) and was operated on Monday night. The operation took a long time because the couldn't find a heart. I always suspected he didn't have one. But they finally found one (albeit a small one).

HA! You can't keep me here, I'v got friends in Tri-cities that will come and bust me out!!!

Pizza Party / Meeting

Had a great party / meeting. There was food so we had a great turnout.
Myrtle Nesbit donated Ken's jacket and Bob Rupp's son (Bill) Will now be wearing it.
Bob Rupp donated Alice's Jacket and now Mary Frazier will be wearing it.
Bob McClary had to be restrained. He was trying to steal the door prizes.

Martha put together a game to help us to get to know each other and what we do in the club.

The idea was she handed out sheets of paper with questions like how is the oldest, who drives a blue car, who has been in the club the longest, who is treasurer, Blog editor, President etc....

the first to complete wins Bill Rupp was the winner.

We talked more about upcoming events, more on them as the time draws near. The main thing that was stressed is that, if you are planning on going to Joseph for the show in June, You need to make reservations soon.

Now for a little magic preformed by the one and only "VERNAL"

Wednesday breakfast update

First things first. Tomorrow night (the 17th) is the pizza party at Roundtable Pizza on Gage and Leslie. Party starts at 6pm, be there.

Next our annual chocolate fest will be held this year on Friday, February 15th at Ginger and Jims (45125 W. Yellowstone, Kennewick). All you need to bring is chocolate. They will supply everything else. If chocolate is really not your thing come anyway and bring something else (Jim says a cherry pie would be nice). Ginger promises a few parlor games with prizes to liven up the evening. At the end of the fest people are invited to take home a sampling of the left over goodies (plates and foil provided). See you there.

We need to start thinking seriously about the trip to Joseph, Or. for the car show on the 14th of June. This is a big show with over 300 cars so the hotels fill up fast. the one we recommend is the Ponderosa (phone # 1-503-426-3168). There will be a potluck at noon and some garage tours in addition to the car show. More details will be forthcoming. There is also a bed and breakfast that is pretty cool and I will get more information on that later.

We had good turnout for breakfast this morning, check out the video.

I bought this car on e-bay sight unseen (it was a great deal), but not only can I not figure out what kind of a car it is, I don't know if I am coming or going. Can any one help?

Say hello to our new President.

We are looking forward to a busy year under the guidance of our new President, Martha Shreve.

The first upcoming event is a pizza party at the Round Table pizza at the corner of Gage and Leslie. Then in mid February is the Chocolate Extravaganza at Jim & Ginger Vetrano's. The exact date is unknown, but will be supplied later. In early June we will be going to Joesph Oregon for a car show. I will give you more information as time progresses. This is a great trip, try not to miss it. You know these short one or two trips are great, but the circle trips (usually six or seven days) are lot more fun. The slide show above is of a circle tour we took to Moab Utah a couple years ago. You should have been there. Something we should be doing more of is coming to the Wednesday breakfasts at the Hut restaurant in Pasco. We gather at about 8an give or take. The Hut is at 605 No 27th in Pasco. Bring a friend, he (or she) doesn't need to own an old car, just bring him any way, the more the merrier

It is a good thing that we had designated drivers. This poor fellow can't even figure out how to get in to his car.

I thought it was about time that I explained just what this is. It is not a web site, it is a blog. A blog differs from a web site in that the blog is interactive. By that I mean you can talk to it by leaving questions, or comments simply by clicking the word "comment" at the bottom of each post. You can post for sale items or a request for help from the group on a particular problem you are having with your car, or parts that are difficult to find. This site will be updated every week, give or take. You can very easily find past articles by clicking the article name in the Blog archive found on the right side of the screen. Christmas Party 2007

Well the party was held at Tony Roma's restaurant in Kennewick. We had a pretty good turnout, so much so that we had to bring in more tables. Just goes to show you that if there is food there will be people there that we don't even know.

The food was great and the service was better than I expected. What made it even better was the fact that Ed Edwards went around passing out $5 to every one. I think he was trying to buy votes since we were electing officers that night. It seemed strange because he was running unchallenged. Maybe he wanted us not to vote for him. I don't think Odeta believes it is real.

Myrtle Nesbit showed up , which was a pleasant surprise.

The gift exchange went well with a minimum of blood shed. There was a battle or two over some boxes of chocolates, and in second place was the battle over some mini compressors. But I've got to tell you I am sure the fighters were the people that showed up that we didn't know, because none of our club members would act like that.

No sir ree!

Well here it is December already. Not much planned for this month,guess we will just stay in doors and keep warm. Oh! There is the Christmas party at Tony Roma's in Kennewick. The party is at 5:30 I think. The club is paying $10 of the bill for everyone. Please bring a white elephant gift, limit $10, and mark it as being male, female, or unisex. I just thought of a way to keep warm, we could look at pictures of one of our tours when it was warmer. Want to?

Well even though it was very cold on Saturday morning we had a very good turnout for the Shreve's apple squeezing. They had 800 pounds of apples. I don't know how many jars of cider, juice,and sauce the ended up with because I left about 1pm. Of course the press was represented by the presence of editor, reporter, printer, photographer, copy man, and layout man, our own lovable Dennis.And as any kingdom has their king, We have our own King in the form of Vernal at ease on his throne.Here are some of his subjects hard at work.

This is quite the little gadget that Vern made to crush, peal, and squeeze the apples,and it really works. Check out the video at the end of this post.Does anyone think this grumpy old man was really any help?I'm not sure this fellow (Eldon Reiman's son Dale), with his hands in his pocket, was much help But it was good to have him there.

For some of the newer members that aren't real sure just what we do as a club, let me show you one of the things we enjoy. We really enjoy taking trips, some short (one or two days) or longer (up to a week or more). Here some pictures from some of our past trips, I will try to post more pictures of other trips on future posts. I hope you enjoy seeing the pictures as much as we enjoyed taking the trips. I hope this will encourage you to come with us in the future.

We also visited a classic car museum just up the road from the hotel.

We did a lot of just sitting around as you can see in the picture below.

We ended up at Bob Rupp's sister's house for lunch on the day we left.

At the Veteran's day parade in West Richland we had a special guest show up. Popeye and his girl friend, Olive Oil AKA Dave and Paula Stands.

There were some other people that showed up, but I think they came just to eat the Spudnuts that Ed Edwards brought and to drink Bob McClary's coffee. In attendance were several dignitaries such as Jack Yale, Ed Edwards, Joe Kuhns. Denny Jackson,Vern and Martha Shreve, Russ Armstrong and his niece,and last but not least, Bob and Delores McClary.

At Wednesday's breakfast meeting we got an update from Fred Wattenberger about the progress of the museum, not much is new. We were also informed that the Apple squeezing at Vern and Martha's has been moved from Friday to Saturday the 23rd.

Don't forget to led Roy know if you are going to attend the Christmas Party and how many.

It was also decided to accept a proposal presented by Dennis Jackson as to what it would cost to go back to printing our newsletter in color. if we agree, he has offered to publish the newsletter for one year. At the end of the year if we are satisfied we can renew his contract. More on that later
